Prevention, Safety, and Compliance for Hydrocarbon Transport Fleets through Telematics and IoT Engineering

The National Energy Commission (CNE) has issued in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the “General Administrative Provisions Establishing the Guidelines for Marking and Technical and Interoperability Requirements” that Hydrocarbon Transportation and Distribution Fleets must comply with to ensure their visibility and traceability.

Beginning September 23, 2025, vehicle units registered with permits for the transportation and distribution of hydrocarbons by means other than petroleum, liquefied petroleum gas, and petrochemical pipelines must comply with specific guidelines in their Global Positioning Systems; otherwise, they may face fines ranging from $259,000 to $2.59 million pesos, depending on the severity and recurrence.

The published guidelines are of fundamental interest to holders of permits for hydrocarbon transportation and distribution operations using vehicles such as tank trucks, tanker trucks, delivery vehicles, semi-trailers, tractor-trailers, among others. These vehicles must have GPS active at all times and be able to transmit data in real time, complying with specific standards:
